What Heavy Rain Can Do to a Roof

Most people think about flooding and picture water on the floor. But before it gets there, it's usually been sitting somewhere it shouldn't — backed up under shingles, pooling around a chimney, or pushing through a valley that wasn't draining fast enough. You don't always see it right away.

After a hard rain like today's, it's worth checking a few things:

• Water stains on ceilings or upper walls inside the house
• Gutters that are pulling away, clogged, or holding standing water
• Soft spots or bubbling on any flat or low-slope sections of the roof
• Shingles that look lifted, curled, or out of place
• Fascia boards that look wet or swollen

Some of this you can spot from the yard. A lot of it you can't — and getting up on a wet roof isn't something we'd recommend doing yourself.
